Often referred to as Eldhraun. This lava field you are driving through came from LakagÃgar which erupted in 1783-1783. The lava field is told to be the biggest one that came from one single eruption. This eruption was one of the deadliest eruptions that have happened in historical time. The eruption destroyed over 22 farms in the area, killing about 20% if the Icelandic nation and lasted for around 8 months. It also causes a lot of trouble around Europe and East Asia. One of these hidden pearls next to ring road. It‘s amazingly grown lava canyon. I would say it‘s very important to stop here whatever the weather. You turn to your left if driving east from ReykjavÃk on road n°1. Then it‘s about 5-10 minutes driving, you will come to a crossroad, one leading to the right uphill and the road you are on goes straight ahead. You can go either of these roads, they will both lead to parkings to look at the canyon. Some like to drive both of them, from belove or down the straight road you can walk up to upper parking. Probably one of Iceland's most famous outlet glaciers. SvÃanfellsjökull was a very popular destination for travelers to go glacier hiking or ice climbing. Also, there used to be some movies shot on the glacier. Some that you might know, Batman begins, Interstellar and Game of Thrones. SvÃnafellsjökull has recently though been closed for all traffic on to the ice due to landslide hazard.
