This cave was the regional assembly place of the Eyjafjöll area from 1820 – 1906.…

Some people attend to skip this location. I, on the other hand highly recommend it. It‘s not so far from road number 1 and you need to walk very little. When you have driven about 5 minutes of the main road you will reach a place where the road takes a turn to the right up to a hill, and the road you are on keeps going down to the coast. You should take both of these roads. Driving up the hill is a little bit of „jeeping“ but you should be able to do it on all different cars, just go slowly. Up there you will get the Instagram picture of your lifetime. Facing west watching where the sea and the shore meet. The lighthouse up there is also stunning and the rock arch. Then when down by the coas…

A place you have to visit. It‘s about 10 minutes of the main road, you take a turn to your right just after driving up a long steep hill on the main road. There you will find amazingly beautiful column basalt rock formation right next to the mighty Atlantic ocean. Please be careful around the ocean, it is extremely powerful and if you get caught by the wawes you can get stuck in the current and that‘s only going to end one way. There is a reason why we are not sunbathing there, not only the cold temperature. If you travel with children keep them away from the sea.…

It is a 25 meters long outdoor pool. The swimming pool is protected and is one of the oldest pools in Iceland. The pool was first made with stones in the year 1923 and then made from concrete the year after. In the year 1927, they started teaching swimming in the pool for kids as a mandatory thing to learn in school. The pool is not the cleanest and is only cleaned once a year in the summer. The pool is popular bathing area and very beautiful place to visit, even though you don't want to go in. It‘s amazing contrast seeing a pool in the middle of nowhere. After the eruption of 2010 the pool had to be digged out due to ash, a lot of people volunteered to help.…

Has been an important place in the history, there were a school and a town serving the countryside. Even though there is not much left there these days, it still has some great places to explore. In Skógar the have a big museum tracking the history of transportation and building in Iceland. There you can find traditional turf houses. The most recent exhibition there is about the rescue teams of Iceland and there you can track the 80 year history of the teams.…

Doubtfully the most stunning waterfall in Iceland. It‘s one of the most powerful waterfalls you will visit. It‘s about 60 meters high and 25 meters wide. When enjoying the waterfall I recommend hiking the stairs next to the waterfall and if you have the time, it‘s very nice to hike a bit higher then the waterfall itself, next to the river and you will find few more waterfalls. Note that this should only be done when the weather is suitable for a little hike. And don‘t forget yourself going way to high unless you plan to hike the walking path over Fimmvörðuháls which is a long and difficult hike and requires some experience of navigation and very good equipment. In Icelandic, we say that Fimm…

So again we are just moving a few hundred meters to another hidden treasure right next to one of the most popular waterfalls. So when you have enjoyed the Skógafoss you should drive back the same road except instead of turning to the right and going back on road number one turn to the left and drive to the museum in Skógar which should then be on your right hand sight.  From there you should walk or drive past the museum towards the mountains you will see a field that you should cross and a canyon not so far away, go to the canyon and you will find this amazing waterfall, which very few people know about. You are able to walk behind this waterfall just like Seljalandsfoss. Enjoy your time th…

In 1973 a United States navy DC plane ran out of fuel and crashed on the black beach at Sólheimasandur. Everyone in the plane survived the crash, later it turned out that the pilot had simply switched over to the wrong fuel tank, causing it to crash. To get to the plane you have to walk quite a distance. Some people might think it‘s worth it while others don‘t so you have to decide for your self. You should take great caution if traveling there if the weather is not great I do not recommend going there. In the winter time, you can easily get lost on the black sand beach when covered in snow, if there is no track. Also if the weather is bad, too much wind can cause sandstorm there and it‘s no…

The hill is about 277 meters high. In the Sturlung Age, the rocky eminence of Pétursey served as a fortress. A force of 200 men is said to have defended themselves from attack here.…

One of these hidden pearls next to ring road. It‘s amazingly grown lava canyon. I would say it‘s very important to stop here whatever the weather. You turn to your left if driving east from Reykjavík on road n°1. Then it‘s about 5-10 minutes driving, you will come to a crossroad, one leading to the right uphill and the road you are on goes straight ahead. You can go either of these roads, they will both lead to parkings to look at the canyon. Some like to drive both of them, from belove or down the straight road you can walk up to upper parking. It can be very nice to stop at the lower one and then walk up along the canyon or the other way around. If you are not in the mood for that you can …

Here in Kirkjubæjarklaustur live about 140 people (numbers from 2015). The town itself has many nice sights to visit. The place was nunnery from 1186 until the mid 16th century. The names of the sights you can visit there are all quite linked to convents, such as Systrafoss and Kirkjugólfið.  …

This mighty cliff is often where you can find the worst wind gusts coming along the mountainside. The mountain is highest around 767 meters. This place is really popular for photographing, make sure to stay in a safe spot though because the traffic on the road can be quite heavy around there, especially in the summer months. You should never stop on the road just find a nice side stop for stopping and getting the shot.…
