What to pack for Iceland

In Local Advises, What you need to know

Are you about to fly over the Atlantic and you don‘t know what to pack for Iceland? Are you the person who waits until the last minute to pack your bag for your holiday? No worries I will try to help you out.

If you are not packing last minute for your trip, no worries this will also help. It will just not include the stress like some might experience.

So when packing my bag for a trip in Iceland, there are few essentials that I never leave at home even though it‘s only for one or two nights.

The swimsuit has to come along, with endless swimming pools and geothermal pools all around the country this is something you don’t want to forget.

Then you got to bring a waterproof jacket and pants, it can rain quite a bit on this island. Good shoes are important, depends on how much walking you plan to do but I would recommend at least have one pair of any waterproof shoes preferable if they could be good hiking shoes too and maybe one other pair for all the driving or dancing if you plan to do that, so comfortable shoes.

Then everyone should have some kind of warm jacket, even though it‘s summer, doesn‘t mean it is warm. So either a puffy or a thick sweater anything that will keep you warm, in the winter you might need two of those. With that, you are going to need a hat and gloves.

If you plan on hiking or joining any activity tours I recommend dressing in layers, so make sure your warm sweater fits under your raincoat and have warm pants or a base layer (definitely needed for the winter season, learn more about the different season here) that fits under the rain pants. The more layer you will wear it allows you to take off or add layers if needed and making you prepared for all the different weather you can experience. Psst… Always good to check Meteorologist office of Iceland before going for any activity in Iceland, but always be prepared for all different weathers.

To be able to enjoy the activity it‘s good to have a backpack (20-30 liters) for carrying extra clothes, water, camera and etc.

Of course, it is important to have any device to catch all the wonderful moment you will have here in Iceland, so phone or camera is highly recommended.

Also bring a reusable water bottle, the water in Iceland is probably one of the cleanest water you will ever drink so enjoy it. Don’t buy plastic bottled water in the shops, it‘s just tap water which is way overpriced. So don‘t fall into the trap.
