Vestmannaeyjar is an island outside of the south coast of Iceland. In Vestmannaeyjar live about 4.300 people. Vestmannaeyjar are around 15 islands outside the south shore of Iceland and only one of them is populated. These islands have been formed by many eruptions. The last eruption on the populated island was in 1973 and lasted for about half a year. The eruption destroyed around 60% of the town and people had to be evacuated from the island. When trying to rescue the town they pumped water from the sea on the lava to cool it down and trying to slow it down. If you have the time to go to visit the Vestmannaeyjar it takes only about 35 minutes with a ferry from Landeyjarhöfn, but the trip probably lasts in total the whole day or a bit less. If you take the ferry I recommend taking your car with you, because getting around on the island is not so easy without a car. The boat is running a few times over the day and there are many beautiful sights to visit along with an interesting museum about the eruptions on the islands. An interesting fact is that their drinking water is coming from the mainland by pipes in the sea.
