Doubtfully the most stunning waterfall in Iceland. It‘s one of the most powerful waterfalls you will visit. It‘s about 60 meters high and 25 meters wide. When enjoying the waterfall I recommend hiking the stairs next to the waterfall and if you have the time, it‘s very nice to hike a bit higher then the waterfall itself, next to the river and you will find few more waterfalls. Note that this should only be done when the weather is suitable for a little hike. And don‘t forget yourself going way to high unless you plan to hike the walking path over Fimmvörðuháls which is a long and difficult hike and requires some experience of navigation and very good equipment. In Icelandic, we say that Fimmvörðuháls is „veðravíti“ which translates to weatherhell and if Icelanders say that about a place that means it can be bad.

According to stories, there should be treasure chest behind the waterfall, don‘t recommend looking for it, one of our settler Þrasi Þórolfsson threw his treasure chest there.
