After Lómagnúpur you will be driving through the long black sand desert. Good to mention here that offroad driving in Iceland is highly forbidden. If people drive off-road they can expect to face a fine, so don‘t drive off the road under no circumstances even though you see old tracks. The sand there are the signs of big glacial outburst which came from Grímsvötn. Grímsvötn is the most active volcano in Iceland erupting every 3-5 years apart. In 1996 we had a massive eruption and glacial outburst from Grímsvötn causing some of the bigger bridges in this area to get washed away. When you are driving you will notice at some point some pieces of the metal bridge on the side of the road which are pieces from the bridge in 1996. In 1667, it’s said that a big ship stranded down by the coastline of Skeiðarársandur, that ship was known to be a gold ship, with apparently a very important load among 200 people, they say about 140 people died. Until today a lot of people have looked for this ship and its load but nothing has been found.
