In 1973 a United States navy DC plane ran out of fuel and crashed on the black beach at Sólheimasandur. Everyone in the plane survived the crash, later it turned out that the pilot had simply switched over to the wrong fuel tank, causing it to crash. To get to the plane you have to walk quite a distance. Some people might think it‘s worth it while others don‘t so you have to decide for your self. You should take great caution if traveling there if the weather is not great I do not recommend going there. In the winter time, you can easily get lost on the black sand beach when covered in snow, if there is no track. Also if the weather is bad, too much wind can cause sandstorm there and it‘s not very enjoyable to walk it in that kind of weather.
