Hengifoss is among the highest waterfalls in Iceland around 128,5 meters. Hiking up to the waterfall is a very nice and scenic route, on the way you’ll cross a small waterfall called Litlanesfoss which has beautiful column basalt around it some of the highest in Iceland.

Hengifoss is surrounded by basaltic strata with thin, red layers of clay between the basaltic layers. Fossilized trunks of coniferous trees, sensitive to cold, and lignite, which depict warmer climates during the latter part of Tertiary.  Hengifoss is the most popular hiking site in East Iceland with a path leading from the parking lot to the falls, it takes around 40-60 minutes to walk to the waterfall.

From the parking of the waterfall, we recommend you to drive on to road 933 for around 5 kilometers or so which will lead you to a visitor center of Vatnajökull national park and Skriðuklaustur where you can also find a culture center, heritage site, and great restaurant.
