Akranes is the biggest town of all in the West, with the population of 6630.

The Museum Area at Gardar is without a doubt the cultural center of Akranes and a popular destination for tourists. It is about the interpretation and study of nature, geology of West Iceland, stories of outlaws, folk tales, stories of elves and trolls and so much more.
If you are into photography or just interested in exploring new things in Iceland you need to look at Akranes lighthouses. Down by the harbor you will notice two lighthouses. The bigger one that is currently in use is open to the public so you can go up and enjoy the view from there and there is even a photography exhibition to enjoy in there.

If you like second-hand markets you can find one in Akranes which is only open on weekends, can vary a bit in opening hours and it’s in the middle of the neighborhood an older lady has it in her garage, the best way to get there is to put in the name of the street in google maps. The street name is Heiðarbraut 33.
